A New Kind of Car

I’ve been thinking about cars lately.  In Los Angeles, a car is not just a necessity, it’s an image.    Some people say “You are what you drive.”  There are those who go into debt to drive the “image” that they want to project.  Well, I say: get over it!   Just like “a rose is a rose,” so “a car is a car!”  Granted, our transportation must be properly maintained, clean and in good repair.  It should also be environmentally friendly.  But isn’t that true of each one of us, too?  We are a part of this planet, and we are consumers at the same time.  We have to do our part.  I want to get a Hybrid for my next car, but they seem to be in short supply, so I’m on some waiting lists.  Meanwhile, in my “search” I came across this great site that is actually giving away a Toyota Prius!  New American Dream is sponsoring a contest to come up with a slogan that will convince auto-makers to make more of these fuel-efficient, quiet hybrid cars.  The slogan I submitted is “Green is the new Black.”  Very fashion-forward is what I am going for!  The New American Dream site lots of ideas we all can use to live more consciously and make a difference in our world.  Check it out at: http://www.newdream.org

What do you drive and why?  How do you do your part in taking care of the environment?  Let’s talk about it on the discussion board!

Funny Pages

I get a lot of my news online these days – I’m on the computer pretty much all the time, and that just seems to be the fastest source of information.  But I still subscribe to the newspaper, and every morning, without fail, I read the comics.  It’s funny how much a part of our culture these little comic strips have become, but they really are important.  Have you noticed how a lot of strips are more political, more topical lately?  One new strip has been getting a lot of attention, “Prickly City.” I like it for many reasons.  One is that my good pal Scott Stantis created it.  Scott is a really great guy with a wonderful family and I’ve known them for ages. The other reason I love “PC” is because it reminds me so much of the now-retired “Calvin and Hobbes.”  It’s really sweet, and a little edgy, and definitely smart.  It features a little girl named Carmen, and her pet coyote cub, Winslow.  If you haven’t seen Prickly City in your hometown paper, check it out online at: ucomics.com/pricklycity

What is your favorite comic strip and why?  Let’s talk about it on the discussion board!
