Made of Honor

Made of Honor is a pretty standard romantic comedy. It's basically the same story as "My Best Friend's Wedding" with a different ending. The twist is that the "maid" in question is the male best friend, Tom, played by Patrick Dempsey to the bride, Hannah, played by Michelle Monaghan. Tom and Hannah meet cute in college when he accidentally creeps into her dorm room bed expecting a rendezvous with her drunk roommate. They don't hook up then, but get to be close friends. Tom retains his lothario ways over the years, and it looks like Hannah has a little crush on him.

Chronologically, Michelle Monaghan is just the right age for her character, almost 30. But I don't buy Patrick Dempsey as 32. I felt he was a little too old for the role. But they could have changed the script just a little bit to have it make more sense - I don't know why they didn't.

Anyhow, Hannah goes to Scotland on business for six weeks and during this time Tom wakes up to the fact that they are meant to be together. Unfortunately for him, Hannah comes back engaged to a handsome, rich, sweet Scottish man who has swept her off her feet. Since Tom is her best friend, Hannah asks him to be her maid of honor. He reluctantly accepts, thinking he can win her over in the process. With the help of his buddies, Tom has a plan. Hilarity ensues. Nice location shots in Scotland, some over-the-top humor, and an appropriately happy ending.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked-Up) produced and Jason Segal (How I Met Your Mother) wrote the screenplay and stars in this surprisingly sweet comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The movie opens with a much-talked about break-up scene in which Jason is completely naked. Emotionally, and yes, physically, no doubt about it. Jason has said in interviews that this scene was based on something that actually happened to him - it's one of those painfully honest episodes in life where we can't help but laugh. Kristen Bell plays the ex-girlfriend, and Mila Kunis plays the potentially new girlfriend he meets in Hawaii. After the break-up, Jason goes to Hawaii to lick his wounds, and ends up at the same hotel as his ex and her new flame, an over-the-top British rock star.

What makes the movie so good is that the characters are all really well drawn - they're real people, not caricatures. The story has depth, we come to understand the circumstances that led our characters to this place, so we have more empathy for them in this situation.

This is not a movie for everyone - it's rated R - there's lots of nudity and lots of sex, both physical and talked about. And there are also lots of laughs. It's a very funny movie.

Leatherheads

Leatherheads stars George Clooney, Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski. The name comes from the leather helmets that football players used to wear back in the day before the NFL, when the sport was just getting started. These are the days when alcohol was illegal and working women were rare. Renee is a smart and sassy reporter ala Barbara Stanwyk to George's charming and clever con man/football star. George wants pro football to enjoy the same success that college football has, so he recruits a college star, the Office's John Krasinski, to help get ticket sales up. It works, and maybe too well. George and Renee have a cute banter going on, a throw-back to those snappy "His Girl Friday" type of movies from the '40s.

Leatherheads works best when it is in romantic comedy mode. When it gets into slapstick, it feels silly. Great date movie. Really fun to watch.

Smart People

Smart People is a smart movie with a smart cast. The irony is that it's about the stupid things that people do, even when we know better. It's a movie about relationships, and how much we need each other even when we try not to. Dennis Quaid is a widowed professor. His life has been pretty much on hold since his wife's death - he's bitter, he's lonely, and he's pushing people away. His teenage daughter (Ellen Page) is a right wing conservative, trying desperately to take care of her dad. When the professor hurts his back and is unable to drive, she recruits her adopted uncle (Thomas Haden Church) to be an on-call chauffeur. Meanwhile, the professor meets Sarah Jessica Parker, his new doctor and his former student. What she sees in him is a mystery, but she gives him a chance, and then another chance, and a strange romance begins. Somehow, just when it looks like the dysfunction will continue with this family, everything falls into place. They learn life lessons, as we all should.

Stop Loss

Stop Loss is a really difficult movie to watch because it is so real, and so tragic to think that all of this is really going on right now. Ryan Phillippe stars as Brandon King, a young soldier and war hero who has served multiple tours in Iraq. His experiences in the war have left him disillusioned and heartbroken. Just as he is about to complete his contract and be released, he is "stop-lossed" - meaning that he is to be sent back to Iraq to fight again. He disputes this, and when his voice goes unheard, he runs.

Brandon's war buddies are as shaken as he is by their experiences, but they each handle it in a different way. Steve, played by Channing Tatum, actually re-enlists, knowing that the war offers him job security as a sniper, a job he is good at. His fiance Michele, played by Abbie Cornish, is tired of waiting around for Steve, so she dumps him, and ends up helping Brandon figure out what he is going to do.

Stop Loss is heartwrenching. It's a story that needs to be told, and it should be eye-opening for audiences.

him to break away from the Catholic Church in order to annul his

Into the Wild

Into the Wild is based on the book, which is the true story of Christopher McCandless. Chris graduates from college, and basically drops out of society to live life in the wild, all on his own. We learn about Chris' childhood as the movie progresses, and his motivation for doing something so seemingly extreme. He gives away his life savings, burns up all of his identity cards, and changes his name to Alex Supertramp.

The movie is about all the adventures and life lessons that Chris encounters on this journey. He soon finds that it's not so much about the trip to Alaska, as it is the journey within. This is a very spiritual movie, one that stays with you long after it's over.

Emile Hirsch stars as Chris. He is absolutely amazing in the role. I'm so surprised he didn't get a nomination. Sean Penn directs. I heard that Sean Penn got the rights to the book, and then he waited until the family was ready before he started working on the project. He was very sensitive to their feelings. Hal Holbrook has a small part as a sage and friend that Chris meets along the way, and he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for the role.

Rated R - it's heavy, very emotional. A good one to see with your teen. Opens up a lot of questions for discussion.

27 Dresses

Sweet, light romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl as the bridesmaid of all bridesmaids, 27 Dresses has chick-flick written all over it. But it's a good date movie, too. We don't get enough fun movies these days, there is too much out there about the war and other acts of violence. This is a welcome break!

The story is this girl has been a bridesmaid 27 times, and she's secretly in love with her boss, but can't bring herself to tell him. Meanwhile, her attractive younger sister comes to town, and the boss falls for her. While all this is going on, a handsome reporter (James Marsden) assigned to the wedding beat, decides to do a story on this perpetual bridesmaid. There is instant animosity, followed by the requisite getting stuck together and then a hilarious rendition of "Bennie and the Jets" while intoxicated, and the two are a couple. For about a minute. She discovers his story, dumps him, and more complications ensue until we have a happy ending and everyone ends up with who they're supposed to be with.

Katherine Heigl is charming - so natural and easy - the camera loves her. She will likely get lots more of these type of roles. James Marsden has been around for a long time (X-Men, Spiderman, Enchanted) but now he's coming into his own as leading man material. They're great together.

This is the true story of Tony Ayres' life when he was 11 years old. He and his sister immigrated from Hong Kong to Australia in the early 1970's when his mother married an Australian sailor. Tony wrote and directed this very personal account of his very difficult period of time in his life. Joan Chen plays his mother, and won an AFI award (the equivalent of the Aussie Academy Awards) for her portrayal. The mother was beautiful, yet uneducated, and she relied on men to provide for her and her children. She was impulsive, and unhappy - not a good combination. She went from "Uncle" to "Uncle" as the children were to call her suitors, trying to make a life for her family. And yet she was her own worst enemy, never quite satisfied, always striving for more. She was mentally unstable, and attempted suicide several times before she finally succeeded. Heartwrenching, honest, raw - we see it all through the eyes of this amazing little boy, torn between east and west in a world he is too young to fully understand.

The Savages

This is one of those movies that was a little bit difficult for me to watch because it hit so close to home. I think a lot of us can relate to a drama about caring for a parent whose health is deteriorating. That's the story with The Savages. We first meet Wendy, played by Laura Linney. Laura Linney is one of the most versatile actresses of our generation, and she has quite a body of work to prove it. This may be the role that gets her another nomination. Wendy is kind of a mess, personally and professionally, and when she gets the call that her estranged father needs attention, she doesn't handle the news well. She calls her older brother, John, who we can also see is ill-equipped to handle the situation. But together, brother and sister do what needs to be done, and they move their father from Arizona to a nursing home in New York. They have to deal with things that they have never confronted before. And at the same time they have to deal with the emotions that are brought up by having to see their father again. Really raw, honest dialogue, some epiphany moments for each character.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays John. He's done great work this year, and a lot of it!

Charlie Wilson's War

Mike Nichols is one of my favorite directors, and he doesn't disappoint in "Charlie Wilson's War." Based on a true story, Charlie Wilson (played perfectly by Tom Hanks) is a United States Congressman from Texas. He meets up with a Texas socialite (Julia Roberts) who entices him to take on a challenging covert mission - to fund the Afghans in their fight against the Soviets by providing weaponry and training. What starts as a budget of 5 million dollars pretty quickly grows to 500 million when he brings other politicians on board and they see the good that they can do in this war-stricken area.

Sassy banter between these two major stars is the highlight of the film. Aaron Sorkin, who is so good at political comedy, wrote the screenplay.

Another quick history lesson - one that we all wish had ended on a better note, given what we know has happened since then.

The Kite Runner

Marc Forster directs "The Kite Runner" based on the bestselling book by Khaled Hosseini. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare the two, but the movie is really moving, intense, and beautiful. It takes place in the present day, flashing back to 1980's Afghanistan, when the Russians invade. The emphasis is on the relationship between two young boys, Amir and Hassan, and how the events affect the two of them and their families. Amir escapes with his father and ends up in the United States, where he must integrate into western culture and still respect and preserve his roots. He meets a young woman in the same position, and they marry. Yet, his past haunts him, and he ends up returning to Kabul to try to make things right.

The writing is very well done. The acting is first rate. It's the emotions that make this movie as good as it is. Some violence, as this is set in war time - but definitely a movie that teens can see, and learn from.

No Country For Old Men is kind of beyond description. It is definitely an original. And it's not for everyone's tastes, this is not a "mainstream" movie. It's not just violent, it's about violence - and the world that it is set in is a very violent world. The cast is amazing - Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem. It's hard to tell who is crazy and who is sane, who is "good" and who is "bad" - everyone has an agenda, and everyone has a gun. Josh Brolin plays a guy who happens upon a drug deal gone bad, dead bodies, drugs, and a bunch of money. He takes the money, then makes the mistake of returning to the scene right when some other bad guys come back. This set into motion a crazy chase that goes on for much of the movie. Javier Bardem is the worst, craziest, scariest one - he treats the whole thing like a game.

The tone is very dark, no music, very sparse settings and dialogue. Interesting, creative, and disturbing all at the same time.

Atonement

I haven't seen all of the movies of 2007 yet, but I have to say that Atonement is one of my favorites so far. It is a romantic tragedy, the story envelops you, haunts you. We start at a British estate, 1935. Two sisters prepare for company. The housekeeper's son acts as a groundskeeper, and it is evident that he has feelings for the older sister, with whom he grew up. The younger sister is clearly smitten, but much too young for the young man. Keira Knightley plays the older sister, she is absolutely beautiful, with much going on behind those eyes and that smile. James McAvoy is amazing as her suitor, Robbie. As company arrives for the dinner party, there is much going on, and the younger sister misinterprets some of the shenanigans and falsely accuses Robbie of attacking a young girl. He is sent off to prison, and the story picks up 4 years later when he gets out, and is in the army. The sisters are both nurses. The two young lovers are trying to find each other. The younger sister, Briony, is having a crisis of conscience and trying to undo the events she set into motion.

The music is mesmerizing, the score so perfect for the action. And the costumes are breathtaking. Atonement has award-winner written all over it. A must-see. Some grizzly war scenes, so be warned. My only criticism is that I would have liked a little more joy, a little more happy, before the two were thrown into such tragic circumstances.

Juno

I really like this movie. Juno the character is a sixteen year old girl who finds out she is pregnant. She's not your typical movie teen who freaks out, she handles the news rather pragmatically. She may not have been savvy enough to prevent the pregnancy in the first place, but she's smart and mature enough to deal with the consequences and make some bold decisions all on her own. Ellen Page plays Juno and she is brilliant in the role. Michael Cera plays the baby's father, naive and smitten, and clueless as to how to handle this situation so he follows Juno's lead. Alison Janney plays Juno's stepmother, and she is hilarious - so funny and with the best of intentions, a real character with genuine emotion. Juno meets a childless couple who wants to adopt, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. They look like the requisite yuppy twosome, but there are issues beneath the surface that Juno witnesses.

The writing is top-notch. The characters well drawn and relatable. This is a terrific movie, that is sure to generate discussion among parents and teens.

Tim Burton, Stephen Sondheim and Johnny Depp - what a combination! And wow, does it work! It's a stroke of genius to have Tim Burton direct the movie version of the popular long-running stage show, Sweeney Todd. It's the most macabre musical ever. The story is of a barber, going by the name of Sweeney Todd, who has gotten out of prison years after being falsely accused. Upon his release, he returns to London to seek revenge on those who ruined his life. He does so by killing them with his barber's blade! The landlady, Mrs. Lovett, is infatuated with Mr. Todd and becomes his accomplice, making meat pies out of the bodies. Some interesting side stories going on which help to propel the action. The lighting, costumes, make-up, sets, all spectacular. The songs are amazing. Johnny Depp can sing! Helena Bonham Carter is Mrs. Lovett, a role played by Angela Lansbury on Broadway. She is awesome, so convincingly smitten and dysfunctional, and gothicly (is that a word?) beautiful. Tim Burton fans will absolutely love this movie. Just be prepared, there's a lot of blood, neon, splattering, all over the place. The whole thing is so original, bizarre and creative - a must for future filmmakers. It's rated R for all the violence, definitely not for young kids, even if they're Johnny Depp fans.

If you're going to see Beowulf, see it in 3D - it's pretty cool how they did the movie that way, it made it much more interesting. Basically I wasn't much looking forward to seeing Beowulf - it kind of seemed like a video game come to life, animated violence and monsters - not really my thing - but when it was all over, I have to say it really wasn't that bad.

Robin Wright Penn is the Queen. Anthony Hopkins is the King. Ray Winstone is Beowulf, the new guy in town who comes to kill the monster. And, believe it or not, Angelina Jolie is the monster's mother! Beowulf is based on the old Nordic poem, and I wasn't familiar with the story, but I know that it's one of Freddy's favorite books.

For teen boys, they'll probably really love it. Girls, I don't think so. Kids under 10, no way.

Sidney Lumet directs this movie - which gives you a good idea of its tone - very dark, intense, and artfully directed. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is Andy, the big brother who looks like he's got it all together but who is actually deep in debt from embezzling from his company and his heroine addiction. His wife is Gina, played by Marisa Tomei. This is a great role for her. She's lost, disconnected from her husband and having an affair with his loser little brother. The little brother is Hank, played by Ethan Hawke, recently divorced and desperate for money. Andy comes up with a scheme for Hank to rob their parents' suburban jewelry store, pawn the goods, and get both of them a new start. But things go awry, and then they get worse. Albert Finney is brilliant, as always, as the dad. Thought provoking, conversation invoking - but you kind of walk out a little depressed. Very heavy.

John Cusack stars as the widower who takes in a troubled child. John is a science fiction author, a little eccentric and a little sad, which makes him the perfect foster parent for Dennis, a quirky and damaged little boy in much need of acceptance and a loving home. The title comes from the fact that Dennis insists he is from Mars. And there are times when we might just believe him! Joan Cusack is John's sister, nice casting choice - she's wonderful and funny and very real. Amanda Peet is the love interest, his sister-in-law who really "gets" him. It's warm and sweet, a little corny at times, but it tugs at your heart. And it has a happy ending.

American Gangster

American Gangster is a powerful movie based on a true story. Set in the 1960's, the time of the Vietnam War, the drug culture was starting to explode, and one man, Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, knew how to profit from it. Lucas was a charming con man, a brilliant entrepreneur, and the most dangerous person in all of New York. In a time when most policemen were "on the take" getting their share from all of this extra busines on the streets, one good cop, Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe, sets off to get Lucas and his multi-million dollar operation.

Much of the movie plays off these two men separately, moving in two different worlds. When they finally come together the scenes are electrifying. Two Oscar winners, and you can see why.

The movie clocks in at about 2 1/2 hours, but the pace is quick so it doesn't seem that long. Very intense, lots of violence.

Dan in Real Life

Steve Carell stars in the title role in "Dan in Real Life," an adult romantic comedy, emphasis on the comedy. This is not a teen comedy, with bathroom jokes and lowball humor. This one is smart, and witty and sweet and off-beat all at the same time. Dan is a widower, on a weekend visit to the parents lake home with his whole family - brothers, sisters, assorted nieces and nephews and his 3 daughters. Many of the laughs come from daughter number 2, a typical drama queen teen in love. Juliette Binoche plays Marie, Dan's love interest, who also happens to be his brother's girlfriend. A nice little conflict that plays on different levels.

The audience was a mix of date night couples and older teens who are Steve Carell fans. The movie actually got applause at the end. I loved it! No sex scenes, no violence, no swearing, just lots of good writing and acting - quite refreshing!

Michael Clayton is George Clooney's Erin Brokovich. He'll likely get nominated for this role as the attorney his firm goes to when they need to clean up "messes." He's got messes of his own, including money problems from a failed restaurant venture, a gambling problem, and trying to be a good divorced dad. Most of the time, the guy is understandably stressed, but he manages to get through the day looking like he's got it all together. When his mentor has a crisis of conscience and starts to turn on a multi-million dollar case, it's Clayton that is sent to fix the situation. It's more than any one guy can handle, and Clayton ends up being a target as well. Desperate and confused, our flawed hero doesn't know who to trust. Tilda Swinton eats up the scenery as the opposing attorney, well rehearsed and calculated, yet teetering on the edge of a breakdown. Well written, smartly directed. One caveat: No love scenes, George is fully clothed the whole time.

I really like this movie. 5 women and a token man come together to form a book club when one of the women needs some support from her friends. They decide on the Jane Austen books, and to meet once a month. We follow the group through their changes and growth during this time, and they discuss the parallels in their lives to those of the characters in the books. Maria Bello is so great - I think she is a fantastic actress, and doesn't seem to get the credit that some other actresses of her generation do. Emily Blunt, Jimmy Smits, Amy Brenneman, Cindy Pickett - it's a terrific cast. Definitely character driven, each one has a nice arc. You might call it a "chick flick" but I took my husband and he enjoyed it a lot more than he thought he was going to!

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Wow. This is the first real Oscar contender I've seen - and I think it just might sweep awards season. This Elizabeth is a sequel to the one that came out 9 years ago with much of the same cast and crew. I was lucky enough to attend a screening where Geoffrey Rush, Abbie Cornish and the director, Shekhar Kapur, did a Q and A with the audience afterwards.

The script is phenomenal. It's history, after all. True events are always more compelling to me than something that is merely made up. Cate Blanchett reprises the role that made her a movie star and she is even better, if that is possible, this time around. What an amazing actress, and what an amazing character she gets to play! Elizabeth is definitely larger than life. In this story, she's a mature queen, confident and cool. Abbie Cornish is her favorite lady-in-waiting, "Bess," a young lady devoted to her queen. Clive Owen is the intriguing Sir Walter Raleigh, the one man who catches the attention of both of them. It's an interesting love triangle.

When I asked Shekhar Kapur about this triangle, he explained that his take on it was that Elizabeth and Bess are actually the same person. Elizabeth represents the spiritual, the divine. Bess represents the mortal, the material. In order to rule England, and lead victoriously in this war against Philip of Spain, she must not be distracted by her mortal self, she must be immortal. So as Bess ultimately "wins" Sir Walter, Elizabeth is free to serve, to follow her destiny. How insightful, how intense. I vote for this guy for best director!

The mythology involved in this tale, the imagery, the scenery, the camera work, the costumes - all the absolute best. Well done. Brilliant.

Based on the story of Jane Austen, one of the best-loved, and best-selling, novelists of all time, Becoming Jane stars Anne Hathaway in the title role. Back in the time when women were expected, even required, to marry in order to secure a future for themselves, our dear Miss Austen bucked the trend and determined to make a life for herself "by the pen." She turns away the attention of young suitors, until she meets her match in one Mr. LaFoy. The two dislike each other at first, then challenge each other intellectually, then finally give in to their undeniable attraction. They're good for each other, and yet, it's the challenges of life, rather than love, that inevitably keeps them apart.

The role of Jane suits Anne Hathaway like a glove. The actress looks like she belongs in this era. Costumes are beautiful, setting is lush and authentic. Many would call this a "chick flick" and women definitely will like the movie more than men will. Partly because we love Jane Austen's books, and are excited to see the author come to life on film. And partly because we're swept away as a strong, independent young woman experiences romance both with a dashing young man, and a literary calling. Well written and expertly directed, Becoming Jane is sweet and strong, just like its heroine.

Transformers

OK- let me explain - the "C" grade is a compromise. I personally would have given Transformers a solid "D" - it was way too long, tried too hard to have "heart" - even though the cars that turn into robots are really some kind of alien form and not real people - and I felt like I was watching a movie made for 10 year old boys. I was bored. The dialogue was really stupid, there were all these crazy fight scenes, and the attempt at comedy fell flat. But then I talked with my husband, the guy who dragged me to this movie in the first place. Actually, we made a deal, I'd see Transformers with him if he'd see Evening with me. A deal's a deal! My husband actually LIKED Transformers! He was laughing at the jokes and smiling through the whole thing - I was shocked! And then my 17 year old son came home from watching the movie with his friends, and HE liked it, too! So they said that the movie rated at least a "B" - so given that they represent a huge part of the population, I decided to average out the grades. It you're male, or in your teens or younger, you'll probably really enjoy this movie. If you're female, or over 30, you might think twice before making a deal with your significant other.

A Mighty Heart is based on the book of the same name by Mariane Pearl. Mariane Pearl is a journalist, and the widow of journalist Daniel Pearl, who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan. This is her story, and it is heartbreaking. Angelina Jolie becomes absorbed in the role of Mariane - Angelina is such a major celebrity, but she's such a good actress that you actually forget it's her playing the part. And this is a tough part to play, with a huge range of emotions. She's guaranteed a Best Actress Oscar nomination. The entire cast is wonderful, but it's really Angelina's movie. The story is compelling, and although it mostly takes place within an apartment in Pakistan, the emotions drive the action and you find yourself holding your breath. Yes, there is some violence, but most of it takes place off screen. Teens can handle it.

Sicko

It's very rare that I give a movie an A+. I can't even remember the last time I did it. But Sicko totally deserves it. This movie takes a very complex topic, and makes it totally easy to understand. And it does it in a way that is not only entertaining, but enlightening! Michael Moore is a documentary genius. What I love about his latest effort in Sicko is that while he's making the movie he's totally putting forth a work of humanitarianism. He helps several people get the health care that they've been denied by taking them to, of all places, Cuba!

Sicko looks at the American health care system. It's a system that is dysfunctional at best. We pay way too high premiums for our health insurance, and still have to pay deductibles and co-pays, and even after all that we're often denied the services we desperately need. The alternative? A universal health care system like they have in England, France, Canada - and yes, Cuba! Moore addresses all the "socialized medicine" fears that the government has instilled into us over the years, and takes us to these other countries to compare. Wow. It's a very effective approach.

I think this movie will affect people in one of two ways. It will either make them want to move to a foreign country - as many Americans have already done, and it's very tempting to do! Or it will make them want to stand up and fight for what should be a basic human right: affordable health care available to everyone in the U.S.

In California we have a proposal for a Universal Health Care Plan: Senate Bill 840. Unfortunately, our governor has already vetoed it once - but we're trying again with a grassroots effort. For more information, go to the website: http://www.OneCareNow.org

Evan Almighty

At a price tag of $175 million dollars, "Evan Almighty" is the most expensive comedy ever made. And it shows! Most of the money was spent on special effects, which include a huge action sequence of the ark in a flood. And then there are the animals - wow! I couldn't tell which animals were real and which were computer generated - but it was mighty impressive. This is a sort-of sequel to Bruce Almighty from a few years ago which starred Jim Carrey. In this one, Morgan Freeman once again turns up as God Himself, with a mission for Steve Carell's Evan Baxter, an anchorman turned politician with a wife and 3 kids. Of course, Evan is reluctant to take on this mission, but really has no choice - and once he gives in, his life is irrevocably changed for the better. Steve Carell has found success in this persona, the annoyingly charming goofball with good intentions. Fun movie for the family, or for date night.

Once is an Irish movie - an independent film. A street musician/singer-songwriter/vacuum repair man meets a Czech girl - they make beautiful music together, and help each other to grow beyond their circumstances - so in a way it's a love story even though they don't even kiss. The movie is really like one long music video, so if you're not into the music, you're going to find the movie long and painfully slow. It's sweet, but there's not much meat there to justify the time invested. It would have been a brilliant short film.

The Rise of the Silver Surfer: The Fantastic 4 #2

I wouldn't have chosen to go to The Silver Surfer on my own, but I owed Greg one. Marvel Comics has quite a franchise on its hands with this group. Kids have got to love The Torch, The Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic and whatever that rock guy's name is. The violence is cartoon violence, no blood, no real harm done to people. Everything is comic book exaggerated - Jessica Alba's lips for example, and her blonde wig. I read an interview where she said she didn't have to work out to get in shape for the movie because her suit was padded to be perfect. There's a new villain, the Surfer, who is saved at the end - does anyone really die in comic books? So there's likely to be a sequel in which the Surfer is now a good guy. The whole thing clocks in at around an hour and 20 minutes or so. Great for kids' short attention spans. Or for parents who get bored easily.

The Oceans crew is back - and they're at their best when they're bouncing off of each other. These guys have the best onscreen chemistry for a group of men to come around in a long time. It's really like they're being themselves - and sometimes it's hard to delineate between the actor and the character, they're so easy and charming in their roles. In this story, they're out for revenge against casino boss Al Pacino - and his sidekick Ellen Barkin. George Clooney rallies his troups, and they all fall into their familiar places. How they do what they do requires a lot of exposition, but that's ok delivered in the melodious tones of the Clooney baritone. There are a lot of little "inside" moments - like George crying during an Oprah episode, and telling Brad Pitt he needs to settle down, "have some kids." It's fun to watch, an entertaining night out. No rocket science here, no big messages. It's like Vegas, the city the crew calls home; not a lot of substance, but they put on a good show.

Mr. Brooks

Kevin Costner is back. Maybe he didn't go anywhere, I just haven't seen him in anything lately - there was that movie with Ashton Kutcher that he did, something about rescuing people in the water... but I didn't see that. Anyhow, this time he's playing a bad guy. A REALLY bad guy. The kind of bad guy who goes around looking like a good guy and everyone thinks he's just this normal businessman, active in the community, with a nice home, pretty wife, sweet daughter. But no, this guy has an addiction, a secret addiction... to killing! Yikes! You'd think that would be a hard secret to keep, but somehow Mr. Brooks manages to get away with it. That is, until he gets a little sloppy and someone watches him during one of his episodes. But then, that guy is pretty much a bad guy, too, so he's in luck, and doesn't get turned in.

When the sweet daughter comes home from college, under suspicious circumstances, Mr. Brooks has some hard choices to make. But, since this is a movie, and the story is propelled by drama, he makes all the wrong choices.

Demi Moore is the detective who is on his trail, but who can't get more than one step behind him. She's going through a nasty divorce, to another guy who is bad in a different way - makes you wonder if there are any good guys in the movie? I guess the wife (Marg Helgenberger) is good, but with all this going on behind her back she has to be pretty stupid.

Some very violent scenes - this is a HARD R. Not for teens... not really even for adults unless you like blood and gore - more a horror movie than a thriller.

Unfortunately, she was murdered just before Waitress was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival so she is unable to enjoy the accolades that she is now receiving.

Jenna (Keri Russell) is a waitress in a small town diner that specializes in the pies that she creates inspired by her own life events. Although unhappy with her current condition, she experiences a kind of awakening when she falls for her doctor (Nathan Fillion), new in town, and married. Jenna relies on the friendship of her co-workers, the fiesty Becky (Cheryl Hines) and lovelorn Dawn (Adrienne Shelly). Andy Griffith has a great role as "Old Joe" who owns the diner and dispenses his own brand of wisdom.

Well written, beautifully acted, charming and poignant all at the same time.

The movie has a website where you can submit a name for your own life-inspired pie - very cute!
The Namesake

Beautiful movie directed by one of my favorite directors, Mira Nair. The story follows a young man from India, who moves to the U.S. with his new wife to start a new life. They have a son, Gogol, named after the man's favorite author, and then a daughter, Sonia. The children grow up as Americans, and must learn to reconcile their Indian culture and heritage with their very western environment. "The Namesake" is really Gogol's story, how he learns and grows and changes from the experiences in his life, how his father influenced him, and how he forges a life for himself that brings together all of the elements that make up the man he has become. The characters are all richly drawn, the location scenes are incredible. I cried when the family visited The Taj Mahal. Wonderful movie, definitely worth seeing.

We first see Mark Wahlberg's character as a sniper in the army - he's in Ethiopia with his buddy and shooting partner - they complete their mission only to be left behind by the rest of their group. The partner is killed. Cut to three years later, here's Mark now a recluse mountain man, the only relationship he has is with his dog. He's approached by Danny Glover and some official looking government types to take on an assignment - he's reluctant, but they appeal to his patriotism, and gets to work.

Things go awry and poor Mark ends up getting set up for a political assasination. But he's more clever than these guys bargained for, and the cat and mouse chase is on. The movie is pretty formulaic, one girl, an unlikely sidekick, and lots of action. What do you expect when the movie is titled "Shooter?" I like Mark Wahlberg as an actor, but this isn't an award-winning performance. His strength is that he's kind of playing a guy much like himself, and that character has worked for him in the past, too. I liked him in "Invinsible" much more. And he was nominated for his supporting performance in "The Departed" when he really had to step up his game in scenes with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Sheen.

Based on the true story of William Wilberforce's fight to abolish the slave trade in England, Amazing Grace is a remarkable movie - the first "must see" of 2007. The title comes from the song, written by a sea captain on a slave ship who was devastated by what he saw on board and gave the rest of his life to religion. As a monk, he mentored Wilberforce, and his teachings had an impact on the young man.

At one point, Wilberforce, a young and charismatic politician, comes to a crossroads. He has discovered God, and is tempted to give up his successful career to join the clergy. His good friend, with political aspirations to be Prime Minister, invites an eclectic group of people to plead their case to Wilberforce. They are each dedicated to ending the slave trade in England, and they need his help to do it. As one woman put it: "We understand that you must decide between serving God, and serving the people. We suggest a way that you can do both." He makes this his life's work, and almost gives his life for it when he becomes deathly ill. But then, he meets a woman, who inspires him, and gives him that second wind he needed to keep going.

There are so many things to love about this movie. It is empowering, inspiring, and beautifully done.

Four middle-aged men look to reclaim the adventure in their lives by taking a road trip, sans cell phones, on their motorcycles. "The Wild Hogs" are John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and Bill Macy. Old friends with close ties, they find much more than the adventure they were seeking! Most of the laughs came from the audience members in the same age range as these guys - lots of "in" jokes for this crowd. It's really fun to see the camaraderie between the characters, and the dynamics between the actors - it's a great ensemble cast. Ray Liotta comes in as the trouble-maker, Marisa Tomei has a small part as a love interest. Everyone is great and is having a good time. Nice to see a movie where you can just laugh and relax.

Penelope Cruz is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Volver. This is a wonderful movie, the sweeps you away in its story. The characters are rich and well drawn, the relationships are deep and meaningful. I don't think I've seen Penelope play a mother in a movie before, she's usually the "hot chick" - but in Volver she's a hot mama! When Penelope's beloved aunt dies, it sets off a series of situations that brings the women in her family closer together. And the women are smart and funny and flawed - they really capture your attention. I loved this movie.

Spanish with subtitles.

Little Children

The movie may be called "Little Children" but it is definitely a very adult film. It's more melodrama than drama, really tragic. At the end it's hard to say which character you feel worse for, there's no happy ending. Kate Winslet is nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Sarah, a bored housewife who befriends a lonely househusband, Brad, played by Patrick Wilson. Their relationship turns serious when they begin an affair, and we see the repercussions played out in each household.

The simultaneous storyline is about a pedophile who has served his time and now lives in the neighborhood with his mother. Jackie Earle Haley is nominated for his performance in that role. He's the town pariah, and he knows it, and yet he is not equipped with the tools to better himself or his situation.

There's no good guy in this movie, and no bad guy. The whole set-up is tragic from the start, the only bright light being the little children everyone is so desperate to protect.

Dark, and thought-provoking. For adults only.

Catch and Release

Catch and Release is supposed to be a romantic comedy, but it's light on the comedy part. When a movie starts off with a funeral you know you're in for some heavy emotions. Jennifer Garner stars as Gray, whose fiance is killed in an accident right before their wedding. She seeks solace while moving in with her fiance's housemates in Boulder, Colorado, and his one friend who arrives from Los Angeles for the funeral. It's kind of one big unhappy family, when the fiance's former fling and surprise child arrive on their doorstep, complicating things even further. Poor Gray has to sort out her mixed emotions and deal with her former future mother-in-law and all of the business of the estate which she has no legal claim to. So, of course, in the midst of it all she falls for one of the guys which makes things more confusing for her, until she sorts it all out and ties everything up in a nice neat bow. Some cute moments, but it's more of a rental. It's great to see Jennifer Garner in this kind of down-to-earth role, she's very appealing.

Letters from Iwo Jima

Clint Eastwood directed "Letters from Iwo Jima" as a companion piece to "Flags of our Fathers." Iwo Jima take the same circumstances and looks at it from the Japanese point of view. The movie is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Clint Eastwood is nominated as Best Director this year. Except for a couple of scenes, the whole movie is in Japanese with English subtitles. But that doesn't interfere with us getting close to the characters. The movie is filled with emotions, and is difficult to watch sometimes. It's a war movie, so expect the requisite violence and bloodshed, and cold-hearted onscreen behavior.

The Painted Veil

"The Painted Veil" is a beautiful movie - the cinematography is spectacular. The acting is wonderful - Naomi Watts and Edward Norton star and also produce. The story, set in 1925, is that Edward Norton's character is a scientist specializing in diseases and he falls in love with Naomi Watts. Naomi doesn't love him, but marries him anyway to get away from her parents. When she has an affair, Edward freaks out and volunteers for a job helping out with a cholera epidemic in China. He insists that Naomi come with him. Of course she's miserable there, but the experience, and the people, have a profound effect on her. And as these two people are forced to live and work together for their own survival, they get to know who they really are, and what they really love about each other. Mesmerizing, romantic.

Notes on a Scandal

Expect to see acting nominations for both Judi Densch and Cate Blanchett for their performances in "Notes on a Scandal." Individually they are each amazing, but the best scenes are when they are together - they have a rare chemistry. The story is about a new art teacher (Blanchett) who arrives at a high school and in trying to find her way becomes friends with a veteran teacher (Densch) with questionable motives. Blanchett is married with children, but ends up having an affair with a student. Densch, lonely and sad, finds out, and uses the information to get closer to her. We get clues all along the way as to what is really going on, and it's scandalous! The movie is riveting. Not for everyone, it gets a little uncomfortable, but it's definitely original.
