When you’re an expectant daddy you’re up against the world –
or so it seems. You’ll be on the roller coaster ride of your life complete with
a pregnant, hormonal wife and seemingly endless questions and preparations –
not to mention a possible hormonal rollercoaster of your own and possibly even a
bit of weight gain.
Go with the Flow: It’s
a proven fact that’s dads-to-be go through some serious changes during their
wife’s pregnancy. Dr. Louann Brizendine’s new book, The Male Brain: A Breakthrough Understanding of How Men and
Boys Think details the intricate transition that comes as a man turns into
a daddy – and that transition begins when your wife becomes pregnant. You may
experience mood swings, weight gain, nesting instincts and bonding tendencies;
my advice is, sit back and enjoy the ride – as much as you can
anyways.
Get a Good Read: As
more knowledge and information is being shared about the daddies’ role in
pregnancy and beyond, incredible books have been popping up everywhere. Get
yourself a good book about what to expect and read on. “Knowledge is power,” as
it’s so often said. Knowing what to expect will help you prepare your mind and
your body to help you become the most amazing daddy you can be. Trust me,
purchasing a good book before your baby arrives is of the utmost importance. If
you procrastinate and wait until your wife is about to pop you might not have time to learn and prepare yourself for the most glorious 18 years (and then some) of
your life.
Be Supportive: If
I could tell you a single thing it would be to simply be a “rock” for your
pregnant wife and newly expectant mommy. Chances are, she is freaking out too,
and for the sake of your soon-to-deliver child and your marriage you should be
as positive and supportive as you possibly can. It’s not always easy, but dig
deep for yourself and your wife.
Turning into a daddy isn’t as easy as it may appear. There
are many components at play working at many levels of change – both mentally
and physically. Don’t fret, things will work out on their own time, and once
you have your baby in hand you’ll be a wonderful brand new daddy.
Sincerely,
Daddy Nickell
